When we first started to look for an NHD topic, we knew we wanted to choose someone who had demonstrated recognizable leadership, as well as someone who left a legacy still apparent today. When we think of a leader, we think of someone who has made a positive change when it was truly necessary, and who stuck to their course of action until their goal was achieved. We agreed that FDR fit that definition perfectly, because he displayed genuine leadership during one of America’s toughest times, as well as leaving a legacy that still affects people today.
We initially started our research at our school’s library where we found many secondary sources. We also went to our local libraries and found additional sources, both primary and secondary that helped create a good initial foundation of understanding towards our topic. We took several trips to the University of Washington’s library and found multiple volumes of FDR's press conferences that we normally would not have been able to find at our regular libraries. In addition, we explored many online resources and websites such as the National Archives, the Public Broadcasting Service, the Library of Congress, and many more. We were able to find primary and secondary sources such as documents, letters, transcripts, and an online interview. We also conducted two of our own interviews via email with historians Cynthia Koch and Jeffery Urbin. These interviews articulated the significance FDR had on the New Deal.
We chose to create a website to display our project because we not only wanted to learn about our topic, but how to present our research by using technology that is different than what we are typically accustomed to working with. We wanted a creative outlet to display our research, and composing a website gave us that opportunity. During the process of creating the website we chose to use monotone colors to evoke the feelings which people were experiencing during the time era.
FDR was president during a tough time for America and he wanted to change it for the better. FDR had many ideas that at first weren't accepted by the public, but he kept trying until he had ideas and programs for America that were successful. He executed his vision, which showed great leadership, because many of his ideas had never been tried before. His influence during the creation of the many New Deal programs and passing of laws led to an increase of jobs and a stable economy from which we now benefit from today.
